Funicular Railway

Salzburg Austria Tourist Information and City Guide

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Salzburg is the Hohensalzburg Fortress.  It is located on a hilltop that overlooks the city.

Although it is possible to hike up the hillside from the Old Town, many visitors opt for the faster and less demanding alternative: the Funicular.

Funicular trains are quite common in Europe.  They are designed to travel relatively short distances up very steep hills.

The funicular in Salzburg travels both at ground level and through a tunnel before arriving at the castle.

The funicular that runs to the hilltop fortress is called the "Festungsbahn" in German.

Tickets for the return journey are purchased in conjunction with the entrance fee for the castle.
